From a neurodevelopmental perspective it is important to not only to identify problems, but also develop a preventive strategy could target unspecific but important areas of a child’s life e.g. by reducing risk of childhood trauma and adverse life events, improving parenting skills and strengthen resilience in the child via e.g. cognitive or social remediation, already before a mental illness is diagnosable.

Along the same lines, several programs of intervention may offer a treatment to individual children that show signs of mental health problems, however without filling criteria for a diagnosis.
