The project is carried out by PhD student Justina Petersen under the supervision of main advisor Professor Julie Midtgaard (CARMEN, Mental Health Center Glostrup) and co-advisors Professor Poul Videbech (CNDR, Mental Health Center Glostrup), and senior researcher Lene Nybo (Department of Depression and Anxiety, Aarhus University).
Background, Purpose, and Methods
Non-Suicidal Self-Injury (NSSI) is prevalent among psychiatric patients, particularly those diagnosed with borderline personality disorder. NSSI is also a risk factor for suicidal behavior and frequent psychiatric (re)hospitalizations, highlighting the need for new treatment models. This study aims to investigate the effectiveness of a new inpatient treatment program tailored to patients with severe self-harming behavior.
The program is based on Dialectical Behavior Therapy, developed by Professor Martin Bohus, and has been successfully implemented in Germany. We will evaluate changes in psychopathology, frequency of NSSI, interpersonal problems, functional level, and quality of life in patients offered the program (n = 96) compared to those on a waiting list (n = 64). These changes will be assessed using standardized evaluation scales.
To further understand how and why the program works, we will conduct interviews with 10-15 patients about their treatment experiences and observe interactions between patients and staff, particularly concerning physical activity, which is an unexplored component in NSSI treatment. This study will contribute to a better understanding and treatment of NSSI.
