​Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is the most effective treatment for the most severe cases of depression. ​Unfortunately, the treatment is sometimes accompanied by memory loss, which deters many patients from undergoing it. A deeper understanding of why this memory loss occurs is crucial for optimizing the treatment in the future. The SAFE project investigates the relationship between brain changes and cognitive functions by combining imaging (MRI) and neuropsychological data. The aim is for new insights to help optimize future treatment, minimizing memory loss while preserving the therapy's potent antidepressant effect.
