Cancer Patients with Severe Mental Disorder (CASEMED)

The PhD project is carried out in collaboration with the Department of Cancer, Aarhus University Hospital and is financed by The Danish Cancer Society. The background is that cancer patients with severe mental illness (SMD) constitute a very vulnerable group with poor symptom control and complex psychosocial problems. Their life expectancy is greatly shortened. There are three purposes with the project: To investigate the specialized palliative care offered to cancer patients with SMD in their recent time (EOL). To explore experiences, views and barriers regarding EOL among cancer patients with SMD from the point of view of the palliative care staff. To develop and test a complex intervention (The Danish cancer-SMD EOL care model) among cancer patients with an already existing SMD. This will be done with a combination of questionnaire surveys, qualitative studies and register studies.
