COPSYCH (COpenhagen Prospective Study on Neuro-PSYCHiatric Development) is a Danish interdisciplinary collaboration between CNSR and COPSAC and. Initiated in 2018 with 27 million DKK in funding from the Lundbeck Foundation, the project explores how exposures in early life influence brain development, cognitive function, and mental health.
The study is based on the COPSAC2010 birth cohort of 700 mother-child pairs. Mothers were randomized to receive n-3 LCPUFA, vitamin D, or placebo during the third trimester. COPSYCH hypothesizes that early exposures like micronutrients, infections, and microbiota can influence brain development. At the 10-year follow-up, all children underwent neuropsychiatric evaluations, MRI scans, cognitive tests, and assessments of psychiatric symptoms. Immune and metabolic profiling of both mothers and children have been studied to longitudinal data from pregnancy through childhood and associated with brain, psychopathology and cognition at age 10.
